A story we all know…

Once upon a time, there were two girls, one blonde, one brunette. Both of them were very beautiful and popular; everyone knew who they were.

The girls were best friends, but for years people suspected that they might be romantically involved with one another. After all, their touches tended to linger, their eyes softened when they looked at each other, they made jokes about making out with one another all the time, and they just seemed so happy whenever they were together.

After a couple of years of public suspicion and rumors, upon which the girls always declined to comment or to dignify with a response, someone who knew them—a friend of a friend, you could say—decided that it was time to call them out on their relationship. That person told the world that the two girls were in love with each other.

That person felt justified in telling the world about the girls because everyone already had suspicions about the girls anyway, and, really, wouldn’t everybody just feel happier if the girls admitted to the rumors?

What that person did was called outing.

It was not okay. It changed the girls’ lives forever. It took a choice away from them.

If you think what happened to Santana and Brittany was serious on the show, think about how much more serious it is when something like that happens to real life people.

It doesn’t matter if these rumors are true or false.
